On October 26-28, 2008, two hundred academics and activists from more than twenty countries traveled to Toronto, Canada, representing more than 28 international mother organizations. The summit, hosted by The Association For Research On Mothering, was designed to explore the mandate and goals of each organization with the aim of establishing an international consortium of motherhood agencies.
Organizations that participated include (A partial list): Association For Research On Mothering, The Motherhood Foundation, MAMAPALOOZA!, Welfare Mothers, Mamazine, Momsrising, Mother Centers International Network for Empowerment, Motherhood Movement Online, Mothers Acting Up, Mothers and More, Mothers Out to Have Equal Rights, National Advocates for Pregnant Women, National Association of Mothers’ Centers, NOW, Sistersong, CODE PINK, Brainchild Magazine, and more.
Initial round table discussions, which came as part of the Toronto Conference titled, ‘Motherhood- You Say You Want A Revolution', committed to working together in equitable, sharing and participative ways that reflect maternal and matriarchal values in dealing with power and decision-making. Founding members agreed that the network must include a sense of community building, and must encourage ongoing discussion and dissemination of information to help bring the motherhood movement to a new, practical reality, galvanizing the work that has already begun
